My début album is the complete works for violin and piano by Laura Netzel – a Swedish-Finnish composer, one of the first women to write music in nineteenth-century Sweden, and a voice the repertoire left in the shadows for more than a century.
It is the first complete recording of Laura Netzel’s works for violin and piano. But more than that, it is an attempt to bring music that fell silent back into the concert hall – and return it to the stage where it has always belonged.
As part of my doctorate I’ve spent long time with these scores – their sources, their phrasing, the world they came from – so what you hear is shaped not only by interpretation but by an effort to play this music as Netzel intended it. Recorded with pianist Aleksandra Dallali and released on DUX.
Sensitive warmth, deep vibrato, the violin sounds like a voice. There is also temperament here, drama and virtuosity.
